Burberry's New Girl

style.com
Burberry Prorsum Pre-Fall 2015

Burberry is one of those brands that I tend to fall in and out of love with.  And Christopher Bailey's Pre-Fall 2015 Collection for the label definitely falls into the former camp.

Leather, faux fur, layering, and black!  All fashioned around a slim silhouette. It's ticking all the right boxes. I know what I like style wise, and I'm happy to buy into whichever brand speaks my language at any given moment.  Why stick rigidly to a certain stable of designers or brands?  To me, it's the mix that's all part of the fun of fashion.

The last time I fell for an entire Burberry collection was back in 2007, when Bailey's 'Burberry Girl' was portrayed as a rather tough cookie.  Inspired by the brand's logo - a medieval knight on a charger - the season's clothes and accessories took quite a dramatic turn, with studded trench coats, safety pin decorated sweaters, and plenty of black patent!

I was well and truly won over, and invested in several pieces from the collection, including a beautiful black/metallic trench coat that I still wear today.

This latest collection is, for me at least, another winner...

Guy Boudin: Image Maker

Image: @The Guy Bourdin Estate via somersethouse.org.uk

Starting today, London's Somerset House hosts the UK's largest ever exhibition of the work of fashion photographer Guy Bourdin.

Bourdin established the idea that the product is secondary to the image, and his distinctive style still serves as a source of inspiration to photographers working in the industry today.

The exhibition features over 100 of Guy Bourdin's works, spanning his 40 year career, including a selection of paintings, working drawings, sketches and notebooks, not previously seen in the UK.

Somerset House is also currently showing 'Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and The Advent of Punk', an exhibition of previously unseen photographs of the band taken by Stein himself, as well as 'Fashioning Winter', to coincide with the opening of the ice rink, so I'll definitely be paying a visit before Christmas!

'Guy Bourdin: Image Maker' runs until 15th March, 2015.  For more details click here

The Skinny: Jeans with Staying Power

Image via Pinterest
Kate Moss - The Skinny Jean Queen

Here's an excerpt from my latest article for the Huffington Post...

For almost ten years now, skinny jeans have had a sartorial strangle hold on our wardrobes.  Despite the fashion press declaring the style 'dead' on a regular basis, we continue to favour the skinny over all other styles.   But given the fickle nature of fashion, why has this particular jean stood the test of time?  What's the secret to its staying power?

The skinny silhouette has fallen in and out of vogue over the centuries, and the current preference for a narrower style jean has many possible points of origin. In the late 1970s it was adopted by punks, who wore skinny, bondage styles as part of their anti-establishment 'uniform'.  Later, in 2003, Hedi Slimane sent his models down the Dior Homme catwalk in a strictly slimmed down silhouette, which quickly became the look du jour among the fashion cognoscenti.  This famously prompted Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel, to slim down quite dramatically so that he could squeeze himself into a pair of Slimane's much sought after skinny trousers!

But the skinny jean as we know it today probably first entered the public consciousness back in 2005, courtesy of a London based denim label and a certain Ms Moss.  Superfine, launched in 2003, was one of the first brands to pioneer the skinny jean, and when Kate was snapped sporting a pair several years later, the rest, as they say, is history...

Wear Forever Fashion: The Trench Coat

Image via Pinterest
Audrey Hepburn

As Sophie Warburton says in her recent article for The Telegraph online,  the trench coat is the holy grail of wardrobe staples - adaptable, trans-seasonal and suits all shapes and sizes.

Here's her guide to the best versions out there...

THE CLASSIC
The original, and still considered by many to be the best. Large lapels, storm flaps and a belted waist make for a classic trench coat.

Past & Precious

Aquascutum Classic Trench Coat
Size 10
£250.00

THE SCANDI
The latest breed of trenches to hit the market, the 'Scandi' trench - or Duster coat - is slouchy, unstructured and rarely worn belted. It looks equally great with a pair of trainers as it does with heels.

THE WOOL TRENCH
Wool trenches offer the best of both worlds - they keep you warm, while the epaulettes and belted waist create a flattering silhouette.

Past & Precious

Adolfo Dominguez Wool Trench Coat
Size 10
Was £125.00
Now £95.00

THE EVENING TRENCH
A satin or silk trench will jazz up any little black dress.

TRENCHES WITH A TWIST
If you want something a little different, look for structured pieces, or opt for print, contrast sleeves or interesting silhouettes.

Past & Precious

Saint Laurent Rive Gauche Trench Coat
Size 8/10
Was £450.00
Now £350.00

How To...Winterise Your Wardrobe

Image via Pinterest

In her article for Vogue Australia online, Lilith Hardie Lupica shows us how to update our wardrobe for the winter months.  Here are a few of her top tips...

Navy is the new black
Navy is a breath of fresh air for those bored of black and tired of neutrals. The playground staple will work double time; reviving dark hues and muting bold colours.

Trade off

Trade in your trans-seasonal staples for winter-proof warmers. Cardigans have been replaced by capes, blazers by leather jackets and texture takes over from where lace left off.

Water-resistant

Don't get fussy when mastering the fine art of matching outfit and accessory; from hats to gloves, shoes to umbrellas, being waterproof never looked so good.

Layer up

When temperatures hit freezing, layer like a pro and keep the cold at bay. To keep an old trick modern, pair fringing with tailored pieces and suede with denim for an easy update.

Style 101: Mastering The Tuck

Tommy Ton / Style.com
Emmanuelle Alt

Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference.  The tiniest of tweaks to an outfit can rescue a sartorial miss and turn it into an instant hit. And it's these simple styling tricks that often come into play when I'm helping clients make the most of their current wardrobes.

A case in point, here's style.com's definitive guide to the 'tuck'...

Editor in Chief of French Vogue, Emmanuelle Alt, is master of the Classic Tuck — a 5 to 6 inch span of the top tucked loosely into the centre front of the trousers. This works best with an oversize shirt, modern belt, and Alt-worthy heels.

The Quarter Tuck

Tommy Ton / Style.com
Sarah Harris

Button your shirt to the top of your jeans, tuck in the interior shirt flap, and let the other hang freely. The more unbuttoned the shirt is, the cooler.

The Side Tuck

Tommy Ton / Style.com
Irina Nikolaeva

A favourite of models-off-duty, the side tuck is the ultimate in nonchalance. Bunch a section of an oversize tee in front of one hip bone, et voilà!

The Nouveau Tuck

Julia Gall

Sometimes you don’t need to tuck at all.  Simply tangle your top into the sweater tied around your waist.

The Eyes Have It...

Image via Pinterest
Cara Delevigne x YSL

I'm lucky to have been blessed with very long eyelashes (with a little help from Revitalash), but they're dead straight.  I use an eyelash curler every day and have tried a myriad of curl enhancing mascaras, with very little success.

But my latest lash find does exactly what it says on the tin, and was an unplanned purchase to boot...

I'd gone to the YSL counter to replace my Touch Éclat, and they were running a special offer - buy a Touche Éclat for the usual price of £25 and get a mini Baby Doll mascara for free. That's the sort of offer I like!

This mascara not only defines and separates my lashes, without clumping, but holds the curl from my eyelash curlers all day! I'll definitely be buying another when the sample runs out.  It's worth every penny.

Wear Forever Fashion: The Tuxedo Jacket

Yves Saint Laurent's Original Le Smoking Sketch
and 1966 Incarnation of the Style
Photos: Fondation Pierre Bergé -Yves Saint Laurent

In her recent article for the Telegraph online, Alice Newbold charts the rise of the Tuxedo jacket, created by the legendary Yves Saint Laurent.

As she writes, it was a shaky start for 'Le Smoking', as when the international fashion press gathered to watch the designer's 'Pop Art' collection in Paris in 1966, in which his first tailored suits were featured, they weren't impressed.  However, undeterred, he made the trouser suit the centrepiece of his 1967 couture show, which received rave reviews, and the rest, as they say, is history...

Today, designers including Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy and Stella McCartney all continue to pay homage to the iconic tailored jacket, with their own takes on the tuxedo.  And when Hedi Slimane became creative director of YSL in 2012, his reworking of the designer's classic masculine styles were an instant hit, and have garnered a celebrity following...

Rex / fashion.telegraph.co.uk
Angelina Jolie & Emma Watson

The success of this  simple but oh so stylish piece can probably be summed up by the great man himself who said,  "...for a woman, Le Smoking is an indispensable garment with which she finds herself continually in fashion, because it is about style, not fashion. Fashions come and go, but style is forever."

And we have a timeless tuxedo here in store, just perfect for the party season...

The Gallery x Past & Precious

The Gallery
 2014/15 Collection

I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Mario Failla, Creative Director of The Gallery in Southborough.  Mario was working on the Salon's 2014/15 Collection, and enlisted my help in styling the shoot, as well as sourcing the clothing.

The theme of the Collection was to be 'underwater', and Mario had taken inspiration from the different shapes and textures of rock and coral in the great barrier reef. These were the concepts that were to be carried through to the hair.

From a fashion stylist's point of view, I was keen to ensure that unlike a typical magazine shoot, where the clothes tend to take centre stage, they should in this case simply serve to reinforce the theme and create the perfect back drop for the hair.

I selected pieces from Past & Precious that were in muted hues and/or had interesting textural elements about them, to reflect Mario's chosen theme, and you can see the results of the shoot here

Congratulations to Mario and the team at The Gallery for their recent success in being named Salon Of The Year at the British Hairdressing Business Awards!
