Shoe Heaven

Sex And The City

Do you remember this scene from the first Sex And The City film? Carrie's custom made shoe closet courtesy of 'Big'.  My idea of heaven!

While we don't all have the room for a walk in wardrobe, there are some clever and creative space conscious ways we can store our favourite footwear.

Here are some great ideas courtesy of whowhatwear.com...

It wouldn't be spring without a floral fashion trend. But designers are always looking for new ways to bring a fresh take on this seasonal favourite, and this year is no exception.

Simple silhouettes and shapes were the back drop for beautiful embellishment techniques on the spring/summer catwalks, and the use of layers also brought a three dimensional dynamic to the look.

Tap into this trend in this super sixties style shift which has just arrived in store...

Marilyn Moore

The simple shape is brought to life by the sequin flowers, which are sewn onto sheer white netting to reveal a pale metallic pink layer underneath.  Just perfect!

Glow To Go!

Dior

Don't be put off by the colour, this pink potion delivers the perfect french manicure!

I don't know how Dior have done it, but with just one coat of their Nail Glow the pinks of my nails look instantly pinker and the tips the whitest white!

I like to use this when I haven't got much time to paint my nails, especially as the product dries so quickly too.

A really handy must have!

The New Neutral

Images via Pinterest

There's been much talk in fashion circles of late about the perennial lure of leopard print.  And its constant presence on the catwalks, as well as in the most stylish closets, has led many to now consider it the new neutral.  And I must admit, I'm inclined to agree.

For those of us who favour quite a sober palette, this dramatic but definitely wearable print slips easily into the wardrobe. And it's the perfect sartorial pick me up.

If you haven't yet invested in a piece of this popular print, then now's the time!   This super soft jacket has just arrived in store...

Nothing To Wear?

Image via Pinterest

This is a phrase I hear often, from clients and customers alike, and regardless of the size of their wardrobes or wallets!

If you face a daily dressing dilemma, then it's time to take a step back and take stock.  No more random spending on unworthy pieces for your ever growing wardrobe. And a Style Consultation with yours truly is definitely in order!

In the meantime, why not put together a few key outfits that you know you can always rely on?  According to Carmen Hamilton, author of the blog "The Chronicles of Her", the secret to overcoming the 'nothing to wear' dilemma is simply preparation, and she recently shared with vogue.com.au the fail-safe items and outfits she keeps to hand to fall back on...

A White Shirt & Black Trousers
The crisp white shirt has seen me through countless wardrobe malfunctions. Pair it back with black pants, a skirt or jeans and you’re instantly channeling Parisian chic!

The Little Black Dress
Get more mileage out of your little black dress by dressing it down for daytime. Trainers are it at the moment, but if the sporty vibe’s not for you, go for black man-style loafers.

The Floral Dress
Every woman needs a statement floral dress in her wardrobe arsenal to call-on occasionally. The best part? It’s practically an outfit on its own, so hardly any extra styling effort is required.

Black on Black
Last, but definitely not least, an ensemble of black on black is your best friend when your outfit options are looking dire. Mix up shapes, textures and proportions to make things a bit more exciting, or keep it classic for a more clean and minimal result.

Weekend Dressing

matchesfashion.com

When the weekend arrives, do you dress up or dress down?

In this week's Style Debate on matchesfashion.com,  Caroline Issa, fashion director of Tank magazine, and Sophie de Rosée, style editor of the Telegraph magazine, share their views on weekend dressing.

"...we spend the working week 'playing the part' of our professional self...and I tend to feel that weekends need not be wasted. I don't wish to hibernate in public!"
Caroline Issa

"I’m a firm believer in dressing up for the occasion...So when it comes to the weekend, I’m delighted to leave my heels in the wardrobe and reach for my sneakers." Sophie de Rosée

Although both women hold very different views, they do share the same passion for fashion.  Sophie's off duty style may be less dressy than Caroline's, but her look is no less considered and is carefully pulled together.

Dressing down doesn't mean giving up.  And for those of you who have to adhere to some form of dress code during the week, the weekend is your chance to show off your own fashion personality.

So, what are you waiting for!

The Seasonal Switchover Part II

Image via Pinterest

Carefully cared for clothes will not only look and feel better, but last longer too! Protect your precious pieces by following these five simple steps...

  • Replace wire hangers - the type that dry cleaners use - with more substantial versions, as the wire variety will tend to damage your clothes.

  • To help keep your clothes fresh and moth free, place lavender bags, pot pourri, cedar wood or herb mix sachets on the rails of your wardrobe - one every 40-50cm - and in your drawers amongst your folded items.  And do remember to renew them every six months. Here at the shop we stock the Total Wardrobe Care range of natural, anti-moth products.

  • Stuff your handbags with acid free tissue paper to help maintain elasticity, but take care not to overfill them. Always keep your bags out of direct sunlight, and in their original dust covers if you have them. And don't forget to clean and protect your bags using specialist cleaning products - I use the Furniture Clinic's Handbag Care Kit for my leather bags.

  • If possible, keep your shoes and boots in their original boxes to protect them from dust and scratches, and always use shoe or boot trees.  As a minimum, try to polish your shoes and boots every six to eight times they are worn.

  • If you have garments that must be dry cleaned, try to do this as little as possible.  Not only can dry cleaning be expensive, but prolonged use of chemicals and heavy pressing can take the 'life' out of your clothes, and eventually causes fabric sheen.  Instead, air and brush garments between each wear and check for stains as well as loose threads before re-hanging.

The Seasonal Switchover Part I

Image via Pinterest

Yes, it's that time of the year again.  With the new season now upon us, those winter woollies can (hopefully) be safely stored away in favour of our much lighter layers.

And why not take the opportunity to spring clean your wardrobe? Simply set aside some 'me' time and follow my handy step by step guide...

Firstly, remove everything from your wardrobe and drawers - it's much harder to put questionable items back into an empty wardrobe than it is to take them out of a full one!

Vacuum the insides and wash them with soapy water. Then, while your furniture is drying, take a long hard look at your clothes and ask yourself the following...

  • Are you holding onto pieces from the past in the hope that they'll come back into fashion? If so, then don't!  Despite the regular 'recyling' of trends, the updated versions are always a little different.

  • Do you have a tendency to overdose on certain items?  You don't necessarily have to rid yourself of any of them, just keep in mind how many you have next time you find yourself heading to the cash desk with yet another.

  • Have you been hanging onto pieces which no longer fit or flatter you in case you drop a dress size? If the answer's yes, then do try and be honest with yourself.  Have you set yourself an unrealistic goal?  Why not take a trip to a local tailor to see if they can be altered so that you can enjoy wearing them now.

  • Are there any items that are simply no longer 'you'?  If so, they may be perfect for someone else.  So offset your closet footprint by taking them to a local charity, or drop them in to Past & Precious!

Finally, examine your remaining clothes carefully.  Items worn to a sheen from dry cleaning or with immovable stains should be consigned to the bin.  And only put clean clothes back into your wardrobe and drawers -  this will help to protect them against moths.

Does decluttering your closet seem like an overwhelming task?  To learn more about booking a wardrobe edit simply pop in and see me at the shop or click here for my contact details.

Look out for Part II of this post tomorrow...
