How to...Wear Leather Trousers

matchesfashion.com

Leather trousers have long lost their once slightly dubious style connotations, and are now a firm fashion favourite.  But there is more to this new wardrobe staple than the ubiquitous skinny...

In matchesfashion.com's Style Report,  Laura Hubbert guides us through leather's new generation, and here are her top 'how to wear' tips...

Luxe & Louche

For a modern, easy-to-wear take on leather trousers, look for a loose, low-slung tailored pair. Wear with a simple silk tee and pumps for a chic workwear look that will translate seamlessly to evening.

Pop Your Colour

A pair of colourful leather leggings in electric blue or primary red is just the lift your winter wardrobe is looking for. Balance the brightness with a sporty grey-marl sweatshirt or don’t be afraid to go head-to-toe.

Black Magic

Skinny-fit leathers in classic black are as versatile as they are stylish. By day, low-heeled ankle boots and a graphic knit will complete an effortless off-duty outfit; after dark a printed blouse and killer heels are all you need to up the ante.

Classic Claret

Burgundy is AW13's new neutral, and a pair of leather leggings in this rich shade provides a perfect foundation to any autumnal look – just add a chunky knit and flat lace-ups.

New Tricks

style.com
                         The Row                                                           Céline                                                      Marc Jacobs

Here's three ways to get an instant autumn injection into your wardrobe, courtesy of the team at The Sunday Times Style Magazine...

Layering: It's an edgy look, but it can be watered down.  Wear a thigh length sleeveless tunic over a shirt and cropped trousers for a great new take on workwear.

Tailoring: Look to Céline and Phoebe Philo's crisp cut separates for your inspiration.

Coordination: This is the season's easiest way to get dressed - simply match separates. Wear a top and skirt (or trousers) in the same print for a chic new pulled together look.

The Power Woman

style.com
Marc Jacobs AW13

The Power Woman has returned!  So says Anne-Marie Curtis in Elle's Work Style Supplement.

Following an autumn/winter catwalk season "packed with striving over-achievers", the magazine's Fashion Director shares her top five tips for amping up our working wardrobes...

Dress Up: Imagine where you want to be in five years' time and dress for that role. Always project your best possible self. Wearing clothes that fit well is key.

Dress Emotionally: Deciding what to wear in all situations should be emotionally driven.  Dressing for work isn't about inventing a professional persona.  Don't think you need a work uniform. Tailoring is brilliant but doesn't have to be classic.

Play with Colour: A neutral palette is a good foundation to build outfits around, but don't be afraid of print and colour. If a red shirt suits you, putting it on will transform your look.

Jacket Required: If you buy one thing, make it a jacket.  It doesn't need to be structured and formal.

Accessories are Friends: A good shoe transforms you.  And carry a great bag!

Celebrate Your Shape

Image via Pinterest

"Stop fighting the way you look and make the most of what you have" - Vanessa Bruno

Dressing for our bodies is a challenge for us all.  Each of us has our own particular issues that concern us when it comes to finding clothes that fit, whatever our shape or size.

So, rather than let this be a cause of continued distress and dressing dilemmas, why not allow clothing to be your ally? Celebrate your shape and use clothes to flatter your figure.

Here are some simple steps to help you dress your best...

1.  Look in the mirror and make an honest assessment of your body.  Embrace your shape and who you are.

2.  Know your assets - whether it's well sculpted arms, a swan like neck, or a wasp waist - dress to enhance those features.

3.  Accept the parts you are less than thrilled with and dress to de-emphasize them.

4.Consider the pieces you feel most comfortable in.  Then focus on finding the best shapes for you.

5.Be open to experimenting  with new silhouettes.  Pieces you've always shunned could end up being the most flattering.

If you would like to learn more about making the most of your figure and which styles and shapes to invest in, as well as those to avoid, why not book a personal style consultation with me? For details simply pop in and see me at the shop, or click here for my contact information.

How to...be a Style Icon!

Image via Pinterest
Kate Moss

A true style icon breaks the rules and ignores the trends, but she has these ten basics down pat...

How to edit: She only buys what she likes and what looks good on her.

How to invest in 'the bones': (The classic trench, the little black dress...) and build from there.

How to buy with drama:  She goes for that over the top, decadent item.  If she falls in love, she takes it home.

The utmost importance of shoes:  Lots of shoes.

The power of accessories: Done just the right way.

And a good tailor.

How not to be a fashion victim:  She never buys into the trends and she never carries the 'it' bag.

That it's not about the money:  She wears her flea market earrings the same way she would wear her diamonds.

How to mix it up.

How to be imperfect: She understands that every day is not a photo shoot.

Parisian Chic

Inès de la Fressange

In a recent article for the Guardian's online Fashion Blog, former model Inès de la Fressange revealed her top five items to give a wardrobe a French make over. Here's how to add Inès' effortless sense of style to your look...

A Denim Shirt
"A few years ago, I would have said a white shirt, but that's boring now. If you have an uptight, bourgeois outfit, a denim shirt can change that, mess with it.  I like to mix up the expensive and not too expensive."

Ballerina Flats
"Sensuality doesn't come from heels – especially if you can't walk in them!"

Jeans
"I can't stand those ones with too much stretch. You need a dark one that you don't wash – you dry clean them."

A Jacket
"It should be tiny to make things sweeter. I often shop in the H&M's boy's department or the French store, Soeur, for teenage girls. Their jackets are narrow and cropped. That's what makes them feminine."

A Navy Sweater
"This is universal – for men, women and children.  Navy will always be beautiful, whether you buy it at Uniqlo or Céline."

Quality over Quantity

"Buy the best quality you can afford."  We've all heard this saying before, but do we really know what it means?

Not all expensive items are high quality, and neither are all inexpensive items poor quality, so here's a handy check list to keep in mind next time you go shopping...

Check the fabric by stretching it and scrunching it into a ball. Does it still hold its shape and does any creasing smooth back out?

Check fabric seams.  A generous seam allowance will help prevent tearing.

Does the fabric show signs of pilling?

Check buttons and button holes. Are they free of threads and not fraying?

Is the lining laying flat against the garment?

Check the zip. Does it lay flat against the garment and fasten/unfasten easily?

Are any fabric details and decorations securely fastened?

And finally, does the garment feel nice to wear?

The Ten Commandments of Dressing

When contemplating a purchase, or just deciding what to wear in the morning, here are ten style tenets courtesy of Harper's Bazaar to commit to memory...

1.  Know what you like and what you don't.

2.  Dress for yourself - not for anyone else.

3.  Dress your best at all stages of life*.

4.  Dress to suit your shape.

5.  Look appropriate for where you are going.

6.  Wear your clothes with confidence.

7.  Feel good about what you spend your money on.

8.  Embrace your individual style.

9.  Don't be a slave to the latest trend.

10. Don't be afraid to break the rules

* This should actually read "Dress to suit your age", but as many of you will know, I firmly subscribe to the 'age is just a number' school of dressing...
