Three Good Things...(2)

Benefit

Continuing with the natural theme, I find that if I just want to wear my favourite black kohl pencil around my eyes, they simply don't look 'done'. So, I've been searching for what seems like forever for a shadow that will give that 'finished' look, and I've finally found it!

Benefit's Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow in 'No Pressure' is the perfect barely there shade.  Although it looks fairly dark in the pot, don't be put off. It provides a lovely natural sheen to the lids, and really is crease free!

I bought a pot at Debenhams in London, but Benefit is stocked by Fenwick in Tunbridge Wells, and the company also has it's own on line site.

Price: £15.50

Three Good Things...(1)

After what seems like years of searching, I've just discovered three great beauty products that tick all the right boxes, so I thought I'd share them with you...

                            Leighton Denny

With me and make up, it's all or nothing.  I like a very natural look, or full on gothic glamour! And it's the same with my nails, I favour barely there shades or the blackest black.

The key to finding the right natural nail varnish is the same as with a nude lipstick. It's the colour of our skin that matters most, rather than the colour of the product.

I've tended to find that most nude nail varnishes are much too beige/yellow for me (and I have a bag full of failures to prove it), or are simply too Tippex-like.  But I've just discovered 'Starkers' by Leighton Denny and it's the perfect natural shade for my nails.

I snapped up a bottle at John Lewis in London (they also sell it on line here) and while I was there, I also invested in Leighton Denny's Remove and Rectify Cuticle Remover, which does the job nicely!

Price: £11.00 each

How to...Wear Colour

style.com
Michael Kors AW13

In this month's InStyle magazine "New York's king of the colour block", Michael Kors, reveals his top tips for brightening up our wardrobes.

So, as a follow up to my How to...Wear Black post, I thought I'd share with you the US designer's words of colour wisdom...

TAKE IT SLOWLY "If you don't normally wear bright colours then introduce them gradually.  Start with a clutch, then try a pullover, then a coat, and soon you'll be wearing a fabulous shade from head to toe!".

IT'S HOW YOU WEAR IT "A lot of people say 'Oh, that colour doesn't look good on my skin'.  In which case, wear it on a clutch bag or put a slice of it on your bottom half so it's not up next to your face".

FIND THE RIGHT SHADE "Saying 'I can't wear yellow' might mean you just can't wear a certain type of yellow.  On the spectrum there are reddish yellows right through to greenish yellows.  You could just be wearing the wrong one".

ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE "If you've got a great pair of legs, a colourful sandal will have everyone looking at them.  If you've got good décolletage try a bright necklace".

GIVE IT SOME LIP "Lipstick is the simplest way to do a pop of colour.  It can set the tone of your whole outfit.  If you want a really dramatic look then go for a slick of red lip lacquer".

How to...Shop Smart

Image via Pinterest

Shopping should be a pleasure.  But I know that for many of you, it can often be more of a challenge.

As well as shopping for myself, I also shop for my clients, and over the years I've learnt that the success of a trip is almost always down to the planning.

Now's the time that our thoughts turn to our new season wardrobe, and although I can't guarantee that these top shopping tips will result in a slew of new purchases, at the very least they should help you to avoid those expensive mistakes...

Decide what you want to buy and where you want to shop...
Whether you're a high end or high street shopper, make a list of what you'd like to buy and decide in advance which stores you'd like to visit.  Then put together a game plan, and always allow yourself plenty of time.

Dress comfortably, and appropriately...
Wear clothing that you can take off and put back on again easily, so that you can try on potential purchases with as little fuss as possible. And if your shopping list includes tight knee length boots to wear with shorts and skirts, make sure that you're not wearing jeans! (Yes, this happened to me and to protect my modesty I ended up trying on said boots in the staff toilet!).

Bring the right items with you when shopping for specific pieces...
It sounds obvious, but if you're shopping for a dress, always bring along your choice of heels, and if you're looking for an item to finish an outfit, bring the key piece or pieces of that outfit with you.

Don't forget to eat and drink...
As well as being bad for your well being, hunger and thirst can be terribly distracting when you're shopping too! By keeping a bottle of water and something to eat with you, you'll avoid those hunger induced rash decisions.

And finally, be patient...
Take your time.  Be critical. Carefully examine each piece, and try everything on!

Happy shopping!

Mad about the Boy

Elle Magazine

Borrowing from the boys is a timeless look that's always on trend and one that I personally love to play with, as you can see here.

And if you're looking for some tips on how to tomboy up this season, who better to ask than Georgio Armani, the master of masculine style...

  • Steal your man's jacket and braces to give a sense of freedom and fun in your wardrobe - it's a vital energy that I find electrifying.

  • Don't simply 'dress up'. It's all about playing with possibilities.

  • Interpret and own fashion, seduce in a non-conventional way.

  • Don't take yourself too seriously, or become a slave to formula.

  • Hang on to that gamine, irreverent spirit.  A garçonne should be a timeless figure who never fails to surprise.

Barbour x Liberty

Barbour

The Barbour jacket is a timeless wardrobe classic, but the company's carefully selected collaborations with some of today's most fashionable brands have ensured that it cuts a dash in the style stakes too.

The British label's partnership with Liberty saw the iconic London store's famous floral print transform the lining of the traditional Barbour, and we have just received this unworn waxed jacket from this unique collection in store...

The Eyes Have It

L'Officiel

Fashion often looks to the art world for inspiration, and references to Surrealism in particular can frequently be seen in the work of many designers today.

This season, Kenzo's creative directors, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, adorned key pieces of their collection with a Surrealist inspired eye motif...

All in the Styling...

Plaids and tweeds are never far from fall's fashion spotlight, and this season is certainly no exception.

However, just like any other 'trend' that the industry throws at us, these heritage fabrics can conjure up a certain image, which may in turn make us question whether we can, or indeed want, to wear them.

This is a dressing dilemma I often come across, both from customers and clients, but as many of you will know, one of my favourite phrases is "It's all in the styling". So...

Here are three images from different magazines whose stylists have each portrayed plaid and tweed in their own way, and I hope they help to illustrate what an important part styling plays in defining and redefining a trend.

First up is this shot from a story in Harper's Bazaar. The tag line reads "...British dressing at its eccentric best..." and this is a look that certainly screams granny chic to me.

Harpers Bazaar / October 2013

Vogue's take on the trend has a similar country feel, but their story is styled in a younger, more modern way.  This image is also much more pulled together in terms of proportions.

Vogue / October 2013

Now for me, this is more like it! I loved the styling of this look, so much so that I tore the picture out of the magazine and hunted down the coat, which is now hanging in my wardrobe!

(magazine unknown)

So the moral of the story?  Take each trend on its own terms.  Can you incorporate it into your wardrobe in a way that works for you?  Remember, one woman's piece of charming granny chic is another's slice of tailored heritage heaven!

How to...Shop Your Closet!

Image via Pinterest

Do you take your wardrobe for granted?  Are you tempted by what's new, often forgetting what you've already got?  Do you find yourself wearing the same 'outfits' again and again?

We all lead busy lives, and finding the time to sort out and streamline our wardrobes can be difficult if not impossible.  However, in today's straitened times it makes financial as well as fashion sense to shop our closets - one of the most popular services among my clients is my styling service where we create a wardrobe of new looks from their current clothes.

So, before you hit the stores this season, try playing with the pieces you already own. Even the smallest change can alter the overall effect of an outfit and bring it up to date.

To help get you started, here are a few pointers courtesy of Vicki Archer at French Essence...

  • Become reacquainted with your clothing.  Know what's in your wardrobe!  It's surprising what we forget.

  • Take everything out of your wardrobe and drawers and rearrange it.  Swap the prime positions around so that you 'force' yourself to look at things differently.

  • Try things on.  Mix up colour combinations and styles. And don't forget those accessories!

  • And whatever you do, don't save things for best!

A Piece of Fashion History

Workers for Freedom

British fashion label Workers for Freedom was set up in 1985 by designers Graham Fraser and Richard Nott.

Although now defunct, the pair sold the business back in the late 1990s, in their brief moment in the spotlight the duo, championed by London store Liberty, won Designer of the Year (1990).

Back in the day, the label was known for its avant garde designs and use of innovative fabrics, but this simple black layered dress would be a welcome addition to any wardrobe today.

A piece of British fashion history...

How to...Declutter your Closet

Image via Pinterest

A well edited wardrobe of real favourites will not only ensure that you look and feel your best everyday, but will save you precious minutes in front of the mirror each morning too!

With the new season now upon us, it's the perfect time to declutter your closet, so set aside some 'me' time, and follow my simple step by step guide to achieving the perfect wardrobe.

First, remove everything from your wardrobe and drawers - it's much harder to put questionable items back into an empty wardrobe than it is to take them out of a full one!

Vacuum the insides and wash them with soapy water. Then, while your furniture is drying, take a long hard look at your clothes and carefully consider the following...

  • Are you holding onto pieces from decades past in the hope that they'll come back into fashion? If so, then don't!  Despite the regular 'recyling' of trends, the updated versions are always a little different.

  • Do you have a tendency to overdose on certain items?  You don't necessarily have to rid yourself of any of them, just keep in mind how many you have next time you find yourself heading to the cash desk with yet another.

  • Have you been hanging onto pieces which no longer fit or flatter you in case you drop a dress size? If the answer's yes, then do try and be honest with yourself.  Have you set yourself an unrealistic goal?  Why not take a trip to a local tailor to see if they can be altered so that you can enjoy wearing them now.

  • Are there any items that are simply no longer 'you'?  If so, they may be perfect for someone else.  So offset your closet footprint by taking them to a local charity, or your favourite dress agency!

Finally, examine your remaining clothes carefully.
Items worn to a sheen from dry cleaning or with immovable stains should be consigned to the bin.  And only put clean clothes back into your wardrobe and drawers -  this will help to protect them against moths.

Does decluttering your closet seem like an overwhelming task?  To learn more about booking a wardrobe edit simply pop in and see me at the shop or click here for my contact details.
