Runway to Reality Part 1

As a stylist, I'm often quizzed by my clients about the relevance of the catwalk and how the looks that are shown on the runway relate to their everyday lives.

I must admit that at times, even I am at a loss to explain some of the designers' colourful creations!  But there is method amongst the apparent madness...

Many catwalk looks are simply created to excite and inspire.  The bi-annual round of fashion shows allow designers to push the boundaries of their creativity, and the daring looks that often result can generate valuable media coverage for their brand.

The pieces that are subsequently put into production can be quite different, and this dramatic Alexander McQueen dress is a great example.

Seasonless Dressing

style.com
Layered looks at 3.1 Phillip Lim

Separating our clothes into 'spring/summer' and 'autumn/winter' is becoming less and less relevant as the line between the seasons increasingly blurs.

And it's not just the change in weather patterns that's affecting the way we dress today.  In the current economic climate, we're all looking to get more mileage out of our clothes too.

The answer?  Seasonless dressing, a trend that designers are also tapping into with their resort and pre-collections, both of which are becoming increasingly larger and gaining ever more importance in the fashion calendar.

So before you wave a final goodbye to your winter wardrobe, here are a few secrets to seasonless dressing, and reducing that all important cost per wear factor too!

Layer Up
The key to seasonless dressing is to work with layers.  But layering isn't just an essential for adding warmth.  A wardrobe of basics can be turned into something much bolder by simply adding and subtracting different pieces to create new looks.

Role Reversal
Nowadays, we're all looking for our clothes to play more than one role.  Take a fresh look at your wardrobe and the roles your clothes currently play.  Experimenting with pieces you already own is the easiest (and cheapest!) way to breathe new life into your looks.

Flexible Fabrics
Forego extremes in favour of flexibility. Rather than investing in lots of heavy, thick or incredibly fine fabrics, seek out clothes in fabrics that will not restrict their wear to just a few months of the year.  Look for fabrics that are light enough to breathe easily, but heavy enough to provide warmth, particularly when layered.

Colour Contrasts
Why limit pale shades to summer and darker hues to the winter months?  Clever use of accessories, as well as layering, will help you to incorporate different garments into your look whatever their colour.  Use brights to cheer up grey skies, and more sultry tones such as navy or black to add an edge to summer's traditionally looser styles.

The New Jacket

Harper's Bazaar

The monthly 'Catwalk to Closet' feature in the current edition of Harper's Bazaar is all about the new jacket.  My favourite wardrobe staple has been given a make over this season, and embellishment is now the order of the day, as seen here on the Balmain catwalk...

Day Birger et Mikkelsen

A bold statement piece requires a few style rules, and here are Harper's Bazaar's tips for keeping the look current.

"Don't wear head to toe embellishment.  Instead, make a chic statement with just one piece.

Do add some glitz to your day look: pair an embellished jacket with denim to add some decoration to a dressed down outfit.

Do team it with sleek monochrome separates for a clean and modern look.

Don't overdo the accessories.  Let your centrepiece do the talking and keep jewellery streamlined for a sharp edge."

Parlez-vous Français?

vogue.fr

Non?  Then not to worry, as French Vogue has just launched an English version of its on-line magazine.

My own language skills are limited to 'schoolgirl French', but I still regularly buy the monthly glossy for the great fashion shoots - no reading required!

Each Vogue title has its own unique editorial point of view, and I always find the choice of fashion stories in French Vogue and the way they are styled inspiring.

With the launch of 'Vogue.fr in English' I'm looking forward to a daily fix of French fashion, and not just in pictures!  Click here to visit the new on-line site. What do you think?

Denim on Denim

Styleby Magazine No.8

Time once was that styling denim on denim was considered a big fashion no no.  But fast forward to today, and it is now considered de rigueur.

The key to keeping the look current, as this shoot from the latest issue of Styleby shows, is to combine different washes and finishes rather than dress in a single tone.

This snap shot of a selection of the pieces we currently have in store shows just how varied your look could be.  Dressing in denim has never been more fun!

Colour Clash

Anya Hindmarch
SS12 Campaign

Pink and orange?  Together?  Really?  This has been the startled reaction from customers lately when I have suggested that they try out this colour combination.  But it really does work beautifully.

The dramatic pairing appeared on the catwalks several seasons ago as part of the colour blocking trend.  They have since become a firm fashion fixture, and I have to admit to being seduced...

I recently treated myself to this gorgeous Céline purse. I do have a bit of a weakness for Céline, but it was the great colours that sold this particular piece to me - there would be no more embarrassing moments at the cash desk as I try frantically to find my black purse in the depths of a black bag!

Go Graphic!

Monochrome is a perennial fashion favourite, but for spring/summer 2012 designers worked the colours into individual pieces rather than styling black and white separates into key season looks.

The Interview

ASIP

I am a founding member of ASIP, the Association of Stylists and Image Professionals, and as a follow up to our most recent event where we were joined by Peter Cross, Mary Portas' business partner, I was interviewed for a 'stylists in retail' feature for the members' monthly newsletter.

I thought I would share a copy of the article with you...

ASIP members open their shop doors
ASIP founding member Julie Hurst entered the world of retail via a chance phone call. Now with a successful dress agency in Tunbridge Wells, she hasn't looked back.
After 25 years working in insurance management, Julie turned her passion for fashion into a full-time career after training with Aston+Hayes in 2008. She started Signature Style Consultancy soon after but the lure of retail beckoned... "I wanted to have my own shop but I had no experience in retail. I asked for advice and called the owner of the local dress agency where I'd been a customer for some years. But he didn't give me advice - he asked me if I wanted to buy the shop!"
Driven by a 'now or never' attitude, Julie bought the shop in February 2010 and spent a year getting to know her customers while learning the retail trade 'on the job'. After a much-needed interior refit, Julie is planning an external makeover and a new website in the coming months (including a name change from the inherited 'Panache' to a new name reflecting the agency's stylish and modern feel.)
Julie only accepts designer or 'high end high street' labels that fit the shop's brand. She often puts items on sale at 50% of the purchase price, splitting the proceeds fifty-fifty with the donator. Items that do not sell after eight weeks are given to a local hospice: a charitable, sustainable and money-spinning process that is increasingly popular with customers. Currently in store is cut-price Dior and Gaultier, with new items arriving every day (often with tags still attached!). There is also a waiting list for her customers' favourite label Mulberry. The stock reflects her personal approach to styling: with plenty for avant-garde and modern dressers who like to mix high street with designer.
"As a stylist running a boutique you must keep your integrity and not be a salesperson," advises Julie. "Personal shopping in the big chains comes from salespeople, they're selling you something! One customer had that experience recently in a well-known department store - she spent lots of money, but half of it didn't suit her so ended up in my shop to re-sell!"
For updates on new items in-store, visit Julie's blog at http://www.juliehurst.blogspot.co.uk/ or http://www.signaturestyleconsultancy.com/

Flower Power

Vogue - The Collections SS12

Spring has definitely sprung in the world of fashion, with an explosion of brightly coloured blooms appearing across many of the designers' collections.

For fans of colour and print this is a trend that I'm sure you can't wait to embrace! But if you feel rather daunted by it,then accessories are your key to looking current.

As many avid readers of this blog will know, I'm a big advocate of using accessories to try out a new look, and so why not tip toe into this trend with these beautiful Cacharel sandals...

'Luxe Utility' is the phrase Harper's Bazaar have coined this season to describe the new take on utilitarian dressing.

Traditional urban wear, such as the parka, has been given a more structured feel for spring/summer, with the utility look in general becoming more defined by the use of clever cuts and waist cinching belts.

Inject some structure into your urban wardrobe with one of these lovely luxe pieces now in store.
